I want to start my own business, what should I do?

My father was a painter, and when he died he left me some money, so I opened a little tea-shop. I called it the Willow Tree and all the china was blue willow pattern and the cakes really good – I’ve always had a hand with cakes and scones. I was doing really well and then the war came and the whole thing went bankrupt. I lost the little money my father left me that I had invested in it, and of course I had to look for something to do. I’d never been trained for anything. So I went as a house help to one lady, and she was rude and overbearing. Then I did some office work, but I didn’t like it. Then I came to a Mrs Lansquenet and we suited each other from the start, I look after the house and cook (I am an excellent cook, and very good at baking), and I am a companion. I still have some things left, like furniture, in storage, and would like to set up a business again. I am going to call my tea shop the Palm Tree. And have little camels as menu holders. I mean to start it in some nice neighbourhood where nice people would come in. I’m sure I can make a success of it. But I am not young, and my salary is very low. Are there any ways I could start again? What should I do?

We are all feeling the economic crunch. I am in the same boat. After 8 years in my business, I have no business! I am forced to sell what I have. Right now it would be hard to start again. I am thinking the best recession proof business would be to be a mortician. No complaints and people are always dying to get in! lol To be honest, I would go back to college and pick up some classes. If business is where you are heading, perhaps it can help you even more. Even check into grants. It may help your Palm Tree oasis instead of working up a mirage.

perhaps you could find some capital to start up your shop. have you ever gone to jumble sales? i’ve heard stories of people finding absolute treasures there. it might look like some funny old painting but could it perhaps be an actual vermeer?

if this isn’t quite your thing, perhaps you might ask your employer to invest in your shop. if you give her some good advice, she might feel beholden to you. if you don’t trust her to help you, you might paint a copy of that silly old picture she bought and substitute it – she’ll still be happy with her painting and you might make a few pounds.

at any rate, i’m glad you have axed this question instead of acting rashly. you never know when some nosy belgian might be hanging about, poking around in your business…
