Why do Democrats not understand the wealthy keep the rest of us employed?
Now, I was under the impression, because I listened to Senator Obama during the campaign, that he’s only going to raise taxes on the rich, ’cause they’ve got it. They don’t need it. They have more than they need. They can afford it. So he needs to raise taxes on the rich and cut taxes on the, quote, unquote, “middle class.” So he wants economic recovery to bubble up from the bottom or whatever, which is very tough to do when you’re at the bottom and you’re broke. I don’t know how you bubble anything up when you’re broke, but that’s not the point. I have a story here from AP-Obama, and it’s about three Colorado ski resorts being “forced” to lay off workers. (gasping) It’s from the Durango Herald. We read the Durango Herald every day here. It’s part of our show prep rotation. (laughing) It might embarrass them so much they go out of business.
“This ski season is shaping up to be the worst in years, said a Canadian ski-resort company that has announced it has laid off workers across a dozen resorts, including three in Colorado. Vancouver-based Intrawest Corp. hasn’t said exactly how many workers it let go, but company officials say the weak economy is squeezing the ski business.” Now, who is it that goes out to Colorado and skis? No, it’s not the poor. The poor are working in the hotels. The poor are working in the restaurants, the, quote, unquote, poor. The poor are working at the ski resorts where the rich are not going because the economy is cutting into their disposable income and they think that they’ve got tax increases coming.
“Colorado’s Steamboat Ski & Resort, for example, is more than three hours by car from Denver. Because of that, most visitors fly in and stay several days, while smaller resorts closer to big cities have an easier time surviving a poor economy. ‘They’re not as dependent on out-of- state and international visitors,’ Dave Belin, director at Boulder-based research firm RRC Associates, told the Rocky Mountain News. In a survey of skiers conducted online last month, RRC found that most skiers planned to ski as often as last year. But they planned to cut back in other ways — on lodging, lessons and other extras such as traveling a long way to get to a ski mountain.” See, I thought tax increases and other trivial income killers amounted to chump change to wealthy Americans. But this is what I told you, and this is the main reason I said we gotta support Senator McCain, in fact, because of his tax policy was right.
Every time you hear Obama or some Democrat talking about raising taxes on the rich to help the little guy, it’s the little guy that gets shafted, and this ski resort story is a classic example. So we have to take the wealthy down a notch or two. How could that hurt anybody? Why, that couldn’t hurt anybody! We gotta take the wealthy down a notch or two. They give up a little chump change, Obama can spend it on welfare checks for those who don’t pay income taxes, and life is good for everybody! Except raising taxes is not chump change to rich people. That was just Obama shooting his mouth off. It turns out when the wealthy are pummeled by bad economic news of any kind they pull back, too. Nothing is chump change, and so now they’re going to visit ski resorts less. And when they, the people that pay the freight by going skiing go less or don’t stay overnight in hotels and so forth the ski resorts, three of them owned by a Canadian firm, are laying off the little guy, the guy who’s supposed to benefit from tax increases on the rich.

• Durango Herald: Three Colorado Ski Resorts Forced to Lay Off Workers
they will once Obamas tax increases start costing them their jobs
Because either liberals are ignorant of economic principles or they intentionally want the United States to fail.
How come the cons do not understand the middle class keep the wealthly in business.
Democrats don’t create businesses.
They are parasitic in nature. Always demanding their “rights” to a portion of what others create and earn.
F Wingnut and his socialist regime.
Let’s make sure the facts are clear. Obama’s “tax increase on the rich” refers to letting the Bush tax cuts expire. Those cuts reduced the top tax rate from 39% to 35%. Under Obama, they will return to 39%, the same rate they were from Reagan through Clinton — years of great prosperity.
So, if you are willing to believe that the ski resorts would be full speed ahead if the top tax rate on their owners were going to stay at 35%, but is laying off workers now because that rate is going to 39% in the future, well, you’re entitled to your opinion.
they dont realize there is no middle class without big business and the wealthy
Those wealthy people failed to create more jobs with the tax cuts they got from Bush. He is the only president in 70 years to see net job loss in his presidency (and that is before the collapse of the past two months).
When will republicans realize that if the middle class doesn’t have money to spend, business owners cannot make a profit.
The wealthy would send us all to the streets and bring back slavery if they could. It’s because of GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS that they don’t. If the rich own 95% of the wealth then they need to pay 95% of the taxes. We need to end the free trade loophole.
You must have never left your suburb.
Yes, but wait til Nobaman passes the no lay off law. That’ll show dem rich people.
Because the democrats don’t live in India.
The rich are not cutting back on skiing it’s the middles class types who earn between 75 to 250k.
Why can’t you understand we do not want to rely on them to keep us employed. We want to be the employer . Give us all an equal chance to education and maybe we will be the reason they are employed . If you want to hang around and feed off their crumbs buddy, be my guest . I want to sit at the table.
I have never believed in bottom-up economics. Obama thinks that putting money into the hands of the little guy at the bottom means that spending will grow the economy.
I have to compare this to Katrina. Many displaced people were given credit cards that were supposed to be used for housing, clothing or food. Way too many of them used those free helping hand cards to buy jewelry, prostitutes, drugs, alcohol and gambling. I’m sorry to say that, most of these expenditures will NOT stimulate the economy.
If we try to jump start the economy from the bottom, the result will be similar I’m afraid. You have to fund the middle class who will start small business.
In a very recent 9-month period, 1.1 million large industry jobs were lost, while small business created over 400,000 jobs. Why would Obama and his cronies want to inhibit the sector of the economy that is working, by over-taxing them?
This does not make sense.
Look at Ireland. Their business tax is a mere 11%, and they are THRIVING!!!! Why shouldn’t we mirror a tax base like that?
Most Democrats are liberals. They reject rational fact-based logical thought in favor of what ‘feels’ right or fair, regardless of the flawed reasoning behind those feelings. Top psychiatric scientists are theorizing that liberalism is a mental disorder. You can’t go to the asylum and reason with a mental patient can you? http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=56494
Also, liberals are the most hypocritical people in the world. They rant about equality, fairness, tolerance, acceptance… but it only applies to those who agree with them. It starts young too, check out this example of liberal ‘tolerance’: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/chi-kass-13-nov13,0,2881384.column?page=1
Yea you have my vote. I feel real bad for GM having to cut back on their 5 corporate jets while their employees are being laid off and won’t be able to make their mortgage payments or for the 3 million other workers dependent on the big 3 surviving. I feel bad for those poor CEO’s who ripped off those companies with millions in severance pays and ripping off the retirees of their retirement income and 401k’s. I feel real bad for Exxon who made the largest profits in the history of mankind while millions of Americans struggle to pay their mortgages, buy food and pay for heating oil.
Yea your right we shouldn’t raise their taxes because trickle down economics works, that’s why they shared their profits with millions of Americans the last 8 years huh.
GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why anyone would post a transcript of something that the drug-addled Rush Limbaugh spouted as a legitimate thought is unbelievable to me. the man is a complete kook.
but you knew that, and that’s why you didn’t include his name in your post.
the middle class play a bigger role in the economy than the rich. when we have more, we spend more. when we spend more, we make more goods.
the evidence of this is outside your window: the middle class is nearly dissolved, but the rich have more than ever… and the economy’s in the tank.
It is an age old philosophy they just can’t shake.. Tax tax tax is what they breath, eat and talk about. They cut spending where they have no business cutting and seems to me they would rather benefit then letting We the People benefit. I am not partial to either party but the trend seems to live on.. Face it both parties need a reality check and I think we ought to allow a third one to have just as much coverage and notoriety as they have and then let the people decide!
There has been times where the Independents should have been elected.
Perhaps you should re-think your premise.
Those businesses that are not easily accessible are laying off workers. Sounds like a bad business plan to me, not a result of “increased taxes”. If they offered something truly unique that skiers could only get at their resort, the business would return.
If I opened an ice cream stand 300 miles in the middle of nowhere, I shouldn’t complain when the ice cream stands in the city do better business.
Many Democrats are wealthy so your assertion implying some deep division between the two groups is without merit. Warren Buffett, the richest man in the world, supported Obama.
The article you quoted indicates that employees have to be laid off because the weak economy is adversely affecting the industry. The wealthy are not the only ones who ski. Our economy is consumer-driven and most of those consumers are middle class.
Sensible, wealthy individuals realize that if most people are unable to purchase goods and services, then there is little worthwhile to invest in and they can’t make money. This is an interdependent society.
You don’t need employees to produce goods and services that people can’t buy because they don’t have the money. That is the lesson that has been learned from the failure of the Bush trickle down policies.
Raising taxes on the people who can actually afford to pay them raises revenues. The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy did not work and the current economic crisis is the proof of that. If we return to sensible tax levels then that will help the economy.
Revenues are needed to pay down debt and protect the basic economy, fund government projects that employ individuals through contractors and to stimulate the economy. The economic analysis is not the simplistic one that you present.
TRUTH IS RARELY EASY TO SWALLOW
Obama Not Only wants to let the tax breaks expire, He wants to raise taxes on a huge number of people that weren’t receiving those breaks.
A 90% tax rate won’t affect their lifestyle like it will yours and mine!
People that have more money than they need are just going to shut the factories and retire. They don’t need any more cash. They aren’t going to earn anything, so they aren’t going to pay anything.
Obama’s taxation dreams will only make it hard for anyone to break out of the poor class into the wealthy class. Just when you start making it, Obama’s Marxist Plan will shunt the ability to break through and become wealthy. Does anyone hear the shattering sound of a broken American Dream?
Those who are already wealthy aren’t going to get their wealth redistributed until the next part of the communistic plan.
Nice rant & I don’t ski.
Why don’t neocons understand that if the employed have can’t afford the wealthy’s products, there is no business?
Pretty good stuff…too bad that it’s wrong from the get go. All wealth is created by labor. True, there has to be investment, but that’s a function of savings and lending. That’s why we call it capitalism…it requires ‘capital’. Now we can get savings in a couple of ways. One, we can allow most of the wealth to accumulate at the top and the ‘rich’ can directly invest their surplus cash, or we can pay good wages and let the working class indirectly invest their surplus cash into banks who in turn will lend it out…hopefully to credit worthy applicants. Now if the ‘wealthy actually would invest in US based industries that would solve a lot of problems, but that’s not what happened. They invested heavily in overseas industries leaving the US worker high and dry. Corporations, with their various tax advantages spent their capital, not ‘providing jobs’, but rather buying out other corporations to increase market share. So now we have most production in the semi-third world, but nobody left in the US to buy all of this production. I dunno….the results of making certain the ‘rich’ richer is obvious to me and several million other wage-earners. Evidently this in-your-face fact is less so to the guy that offered this ‘question’. Here’s the answer, bro….take care of the working class and the working class will take care of you. Accumulating most of the wealth at the top more or less means ‘game over’….like Monopoly. Once ‘ya got Boardwalk and Park Place, what else is there? Check out that bastion of capitalistic, conservative ferver, Mexico. 95% of everything worth owning is in the hands of 2% of the population. Do you see any ‘trickle down’ south of the border? No you don’t. the only ‘trickle’ you see is a lot of Mexicans leaving town. Wealth trickles up…that’s why ‘ol massa’ down on the plantation was rich and the darkies weren’t. Check this out. ‘…A bold peasantry, their country’s pride….when once destroyed…can never be supplied’. Give it a think and get back to me!
When are the conservatives going to understand that we do not need the rich to keep the rest of us employed?
Democrats are known for tax and spend policies. They look where the money is for revenue. They will also have 20/20 hindsight once the economy collapses. I don’t expect Obama to be keeping too many of his campaign promises as most of them have a very high price tag.
Liberals believe in the predominance and accendency of goverment, but it is more insidious and invidious than this. It may surprise you to learn that back in the days of dinosaurs and other extinct beings, in fact, prior to 1974 and the following edition of Webster’s Dictionary, a “liberal” believed in ‘liberty’ and preferred to have the government out of his or her business. Since then, the term has been co-opted by the socialists or communists of the so-called peace movement and its violent offspring, the useful idiots that assisted the Soviet KGB in undermining the foreign policy of the United States during the halcyon days of the Sixties and early Seventies. These same folks insinuated themselves into the fields of education (e.g., William Ayers et al), the law, and journalism, and set about transmogrifying the culture. That someone as odious as Obama has been elected President of the most powerful and prosperous nation the world has ever known, proves how successful these wormtongues have been.
A cursory study of Karl Marx and others of his ilk, should show that class warfare–that is to say, pitting the haves against the have-nots, the workers against management, the races against each other, and so forth, dividing in order to conquer–has always been a tactic that worked to achieve communistic ends, which is the collapse of capitalism. Who better represents capitalism than the wealthy? Who better to become an object of envy than those preceived to have too much at the expense of too many? The wealthy become the scapegoat leading the deluded, along with personal life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, to slaughter. Hypocrisy in the pursuit of liberalism is no vice, or the wealthy would include the Kennedy family, the Kerry family, and others on the social and political registry of rich and elite liberals. That as it may be, every socialistic or communistic government has created a society of slaves, but ask yourself these questions: who controlled the slave trade, who bought and sold slaves, in antebellum Amercia? Which party fought against the civil rights movement? What party brought it to fruition?
Which party refused to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, in consequence of which, what party brought about our current economic turmoil, and who in that party profited politically and monetarily from it? Which party, and who in the party, warned us about the damage that these two government-sponsored companies were doing to our country?
Find an independent gray cell–think for yourself!
